The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.3 magnitude quake struck at 8:43 p.m. local time about 85 miles southeast of Ambon, beneath the Banda Sea.
The agency estimated the depth at 21 miles beneath the seabed.
There were no reports of damage or injuries due to the shaking.
