The storm reached Category 3 force late in the week as steering currents shifted its path from westerly to northeasterly.
Maximum sustained winds were estimated at 103 mph by forecasters at the U.S. Military Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
Prapiroon means “rain god” in the Thai language.
