Georgian Quake Damages Older Homes October 16, 2009

Several home in northern parts of the Georgian capital of Tbilisi were damaged by a relatively minor quake on Sunday evening, according to the Itar-Tass news agency.

Local media reports that cracks appeared in several old houses as a result of the 3.1 magnitude tremor.

There no reports of injuries. According to the Georgian Seismology Service, the quake’s was centered about 6 miles north-northeast of the Tbilisi city center.

A 5.9 magnitude quake about 95 miles northwest of the capital in early September heavily damaged some buildings around the city of Oni.

The Caucasus region experiences minor tremors on a regular basis. Their relatively shallow depth often leads to damage despite the weak magnitude.
