Typhoon Melor Kills Two in Japan October 9, 2009
Typhoon Melor lost its tropical characteristics just before making landfall in central Honshu Island.
Former Category 5 Typhoon Melor left two people dead and a trail of damage after it became the first such storm to make a direct hit on Japan in more than two years.

High winds tore roofs off houses and knocked out electricity to a half-million households and businesses.

More than two million commuters in metropolitan Tokyo became stranded for hours when several bullet train lines were forced to halt operations.

The Kyodo news agency reports that in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture, tornado-like wind damaged the roofs and storerooms of 50-60 households, according to local police.

The last typhoon to make landfall on any of Japan’s major islands was in September 2007, when Fitow roared ashore on Honshu.

No typhoon made landfall last year for the first time in eight years.
