Tropical Storm Hilda Passes Well South of Hawaii August 28, 2009
The poorly defined circulation of Tropical Storm Hilda can be seen about 750 miles southeast of Honolulu on Tuesday evening.
Residents of Hawaii were spared the fury of a tropical cyclone for the second time this month as Hilda fizzled far from the south of the state.

The storm had shown signs of strengthening to hurricane force, but began to shear apart late Wednesday several hundred miles to the south of Hilo on the Big Island.

Earlier this month, Hurricane Felicia broke apart as it approached Honolulu from the east. It brought only scattered showers as it dissipated over the islands.
