Sumatra Quake Injures Nine August 21, 2009
Quake Map of western Indonesia
The strongest in a series of sharp quakes off western Sumatra injured five people on Sunday afternoon when the shaking caused an escalator at a mall in Padang to collapse.

Four others were injured as they fled their homes during the terrifying 6.9 magnitude temblor.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 2:39 p.m. local time about 70 miles west-southwest of Padang.

The epicenter was at a depth of 28 miles beneath the Indian Ocean along the same thrust fault responsible for the catastrophic December 2004 quake and tsunami.

The shaking during Sunday’s powerful quake could be felt for 10 minutes in Padang and the initial jolt was so strong that many residents fled into the hills in fear of an imminent tsunami.

No significant changes in ocean level were detected after the quake and no tsunami warning was issued. There were no reports of significant damage.
