Twin Storms Form over the Central Pacific August 21, 2009
Typhoon Vamco can be seen intensifying into a Category 4 storm early on Monday. Tropical Storm Maka was in the process of weakening.
A pair of tropical cyclones formed almost simultaneously over the remote open waters of the central Pacific Ocean, far from any significant land areas.

Typhoon Vamco became the most powerful of the twin systems, reaching Category 4 force for nearly three days as it moved northward away from the Marshall Islands.

By Thursday, the storm began to weaken as it encountered cooler waters to the northeast of Guam, along with increasing upper-air wind sheer.

Tropical Storm Maka never developed a significant circulation, and dissipated early in the week.
