Far eastern Indonesia’s West Papua province was jolted by a 6.1 magnitude quake on Sunday afternoon, prompting people to flee their homes and other buildings.

“The tremors, which lasted less than a minute, were strong enough to cause people to panic. They all ran out of their homes,” said Suharjono, a spokesman for the country’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency. Many people in Indonesia go by only one name.

The quake was centered near the northern coast of West Papua at a depth of about 21 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The agency said the quake struck at 5:54 p.m. local time 90 miles west-northwest of the West Papua capital of Manokwari.
