Surf From Tropical Storm Lana Pounds Hawaii August 7, 2009
The central circulation of Tropical Storm Lana can be seen being disturbed as the storm experienced wind sheer aloft to the south of Hawaii.
Tropical Storm Lana briefly threatened to attain hurricane force as it moved over the Pacific between Mexico and Hawaii over the weekend.

But the storm began to sheer apart and weaken while passing about 500 miles to the south of Honolulu on Monday.

Lana still managed to generate surf high enough to cause lifeguards to be on their toes at many of Hawaii’s south-facing beaches.

KHON reports they made three assists and three rescues on Waikiki Beach as waves of 6 to 8 feet crashed along the coast.

Lana eventually weakened to a tropical depression before reaching Johnson Island, in the mid-Pacific.
