The combined global land and ocean surface temperature for June 2009 was the second-warmest on record, behind 2005
The surface temperature of the world’s oceans was the warmest on record for the month of June, breaking the previous record set in 2005.

NOAA’s National Climate Data Center said that the average global sea-surface temperature was 1.06 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century average of 61.5 degrees.

NOAA climate analysts added that the combined global land and ocean surface temperature for June was also the second-warmest on record for the month, behind June 2005.

It was unusually warm during the month in Africa. But NOAA says considerable warmth also occurred in Siberia and in the lands around the Mediterranean and Black Sea.

Cooler-than-average locations included the U.S. Northern Plains, the Canadian Prairie Provinces and central Asia.
