Tropical Storm Soudelor Drenches South China July 17, 2009
A hint of Soudelor's circulation can be seen south of Hong Kong late Saturday at the height of the storm's intensity.
The fifth tropical cyclone of the western Pacific typhoon season this year brought locally heavy rain and strong winds to China’s Hainan and Guangdong provinces on Sunday.

Tropical Storm Soudelor was mainly characterized as a tropical disturbance except for the two times it briefly attained storm force.

Soudelor formed over the far northern Philippines, then moved steadily toward South China on a west-northwestern track.

China’s official Xinhua news agency reports the storm hit the city of Wenchang, on Hainan Island, at 5:30 a.m. local time Sunday morning.

Maximum sustained winds at landfall were reported to have been at around 40 mph.

Remnants of Soudelor eventually carried rainfall over Hanoi and other areas of northern Vietnam.
