Hurricane Carlos Churns Eastern Pacific July 17, 2009
Hurricane Carlos can be seen swirling westward at near the peak of the storm's intensity.
Tropical Storm Carlos briefly attained hurricane force on Saturday after forming a day earlier well off Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Maximum sustained winds peaked at 80 mph, but had diminished to around 60 mph by Sunday afternoon.

The third named storm of the eastern Pacific hurricane season tracked on a mainly westerly course during its lifetime.

That path made it primarily a threat to shipping lanes in the remote, open waters of the region.
