Tropical Storm Linfa Churns South China Sea June 19, 2009
Tropical Storm Linfa can be seen swirling in a mainly stationary position over the South China Sea.
An area of disturbed weather that passed over the central Philippines earlier in the week had organized into Tropical Storm Linfa by Thursday.

Maximum winds near the poorly defined center of the storm were predicted to reach over 50 mph by the time Linfa approached Taiwan on Monday.

On Friday, the storm was stalled roughly 400 miles to the northwest of Manila, spinning over the South China Sea.

Forecasters at the U.S. military's Joint Typhoon Warning Center said that changing upper-air winds over Southeast Asia would soon guide Linfa in a northeasterly direction.

It was then expected to remain a minimal tropical storm while passing over eastern Taiwan and Japan's southernmost islands.
