An office worker in the city of Nanao first reported the phenomenon after he heard a dull thud outside on the afternoon of June 4.
The Mainichi Daily News reports dozens of the immature frogs were found early the following morning scattered around a home in Hakusan, about 25 miles to the southeast.
While there are documented cases worldwide of terrestrial objects such as fish falling from the sky, known as “fafrotskies,” there were no waterspouts or other winds in the area strong enough to have lifted the tadpoles into the sky, according to the local weather observatory.
Some theorized the tadpoles could have been regurgitated from birds flying overhead, but the observatory dismissed the idea, saying the fallen amphibians wouldn’t have been “in such a pristine state,” when they reached the ground.
