These and other wind turbines in Taiwan's Penghu archipelago cause sleepless days and sleepless nights for the islands' goat population.
A three-year investigation finally found out why about 400 goats grazing on Taiwan’s wind-swept Penghu archipelago have died in recent years — terminal insomnia.
Council of Agriculture inspectors say the constant whirling of large wind turbines on the islands kept the animals from sleeping.
A farmer said he began noticing his livestock were dying for no apparent reason after eight turbines were installed on the archipelago, which is located just southwest of Taiwan’s main island of Formosa.
“If noise at night can keep people awake, then it could also keep the goats awake,” said council spokesman Lu Ming-tseng.
Taipower, which operates the turbines, may be ordered to help farmers with moving costs. But the company denies the turbines are causing goat insomnia.
