Strong Balkan Quake Wrecks Macedonian Homes May 29, 2009
Quake Map of Balkans
A broad area of the Balkans received a strong jolt on Sunday night from a destructive earthquake centered near southern Macedonia’s border with Greece.

The 5.4 magnitude shaking damaged dozens of homes, according to local officials.

Miso Taleski, the spokesman for Macedonia's National Crisis Center, told the Associated Press that no casualties were reported but that numerous houses in the village of Bashiboz, near Valandovo, had sustained heavy damage.

Skopje’s Seismological Observatory in the capital said it determined the quake was centered about 75 miles (125 km) southeast of Skopje in a mountainous area about 6 miles (10 km) east of Valandovo.

The strong shaking at 9:37 p.m. local time also caused residents in the nearby towns of Strumica, Valandovo and Dojran to flee their homes.

The Skopje Observatory said that scores of aftershocks with magnitudes greater than 4 kept the area on edge during the following day.
