Villagers across parts of Indian-controlled Kashmir rushed into the streets in panic as a magnitude 4.9 temblor rocked the region in the early morning hours of Wednesday.

While no injuries were attributed to the quake, the shaking did cause cracks to appear in some homes in the districts of Doda and Rajouri, according to the country’s disaster management office in Srinagar.

That city is the summer capital of the part of Kashmir under the control of India.

The quake was centered about 85 miles (135 km) southeast of Srinagar and 325 miles (525 km) north-northwest of New Delhi and struck a few seconds before 1 a.m. local time.

The U.S. Geological Survey determined the epicenter was at a depth of 16 miles (26 km) beneath the Hindu Kush Mountains.

The region often experiences high seismic activity.

A 7.4 magnitude quake in October 2005 caused large-scale destruction and killed around 80,000 people.
