Cyclone Bijli can be seen gathering force off India's eastern coast Thursday morning.
An area of disturbed weather swirling over the western Bay of Bengal collected into Cyclone Bijli on Wednesday, just off the Indian coast.
Forecasters in India predicted the region’s first storm of the season would remain offshore while moving in an arc that would eventually take it toward southern Bangladesh.
Fishermen and trawlers around the Bangladesh ports of Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong were advised to remain near shore in case Bijli moves on the predicted path.
Maximum sustained winds were predicted to increase to around 50 mph (80 km/h) and remain at that level until reaching the Bangladesh coast.
