Cyclone Lin Rakes Tonga April 10, 2009
The poorly organized circulation of Cyclone Lin can be seen spinning across the South Pacific near Tonga.
Strong winds from Cyclone Lin brought down trees, billboards and power lines on Tonga’s main island of Tongatapu over the weekend before the storm passed to the south and lost force.

Matangi Tonga reports power was shut down across that island on Sunday morning due to wind damage to power lines.

“The damage is extensive to poles and lines," David Wright, the Acting CEO of Tonga Power Ltd., told the publication.

Local reporter George Levaka said that food gardens and fruit trees around the island have also been damaged.

The director of Tonga’s meteorological services, Ofa Fa'anunu, said one weather station recorded storm-force winds gusting up to 68 mph (110 km/h) on Sunday afternoon. This was just below hurricane force of 74 mph (118 km/h).

Fa'anunu said that was as the center of Lin passed across Tonga between the islands of Ha'apai and Tongatapu.
