Japan Volcano Spews Lava Bombs March 13, 2009
Mount Sakurajima belched lava seven times on Monday and Tuesday about 600 miles (950 kilometres) southwest of Tokyo.
Southern Japan’s Mount Sakurajima volcano erupted on Tuesday for the second time this year, spewing hot lava high into the sky near the city of Kagoshima.

Globs of lava were found a mile and a quarter (nearly 2 kilometres) from the crater, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Since reawakening in 1955, Mount Sakurajima has become one of Japan's most active volcanoes with thousands of minor explosions reported each year.

The country’s transport ministry maintains a network of fixed cameras to monitor the mountain’s activity and to allow for a rapid warning response once activity is observed.

Seismologists had begun to suspect an imminent eruption over the weekend due to a series of smaller explosions that began on Saturday.

There have been no reports of damage or injuries due to Sakurajima’s most recent eruptions.
