Undersea Quake Wrecks Indonesian Buildings February 13, 2009
Quake Map of Indonesia
North-central Indonesia and the southern Philippines were jolted by a powerful 7.4 magnitude tremor on Thursday morning that injured at least 42 people and wrecked dozens of buildings.

All of the damage and injuries occurred on the Indonesian islands of Sulawesi and Talaud, where patients in one hospital had to be evacuated after the walls of the clinic collapsed from the shaking.

The most significant damage was centered in the towns of Melonguane and Kabaruan, according to Indonesian officials.

They told reporters that the shaking had damaged two churches, several public houses and hospitals.

The quake, centered beneath the Pacific midway between Sulawesi and the Philippines’ Mindanao Island, also triggered a tsunami alert that sent residents scrambling into trees and atop buildings.

The alert was lifted about an hour after the quake.
