Southwest Greece Quake Kills One January 4, 2009
Quake Map of Greece
One woman in southwestern Greece died when a wall of the compound where she lived collapsed during a mild earthquake centered offshore from the Peloponnese on Sunday morning.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and found the victim’s husband still buried beneath the rubble, but were able to dig him out and rush him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Both he and his deceased wife were Romanian immigrants.

The compound wall had been weakened by days of heavy rain, and collapsed under the weight of rubbish lying against it during the shaking.

The 4.2 magnitude quake struck at 7:10 a.m. local time about 15 miles (25 km) south-southeast of Kalamata, Greece, at a depth of 6 miles (10 km), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Greece is riddled with numerous faults, and receives the greatest number of earthquakes of all the European nations.
