Indonesian Volcano Shoots Lava and Ash December 12, 2008
Mount Karangatang Erupting
An eruption of Karangetang on August 28, 2007, forced more than 500 people to evacuate the volcano's slopes.
Indonesia’s Mount Karangetang volcano spewed hot lava and ash high into the sky above Siau Island for days, according to the country’s geophysics agency.

No evacuations were ordered even though many people live on the rumbling volcano’s volatile slopes.

Authorities still raised the alert status of Karangetang to the second-highest level.

The volcano is located 1,400 miles northeast of the capital, Jakarta.

In August 2007, the volcano produced explosions that prompted officials to order the evacuation of about 500 nearby residents.
