Hurricane Omar Gives Virgin Islands A Glancing Blow October 17, 2008
The outer eyewall of Hurricane Omar can be seen brushing the far eastern shore of St. Croix.
Hundreds of trees and power lines were downed when Category-3 Hurricane Omar skirted the U.S. Virgin Islands shortly after midnight local time on Thursday.

The outer wall of the storm’s eye passed over the far eastern tip of St. Croix, where most of the damage from Omar occurred.

Despite maximum sustained winds of about 110 mph (180 km/h) near the storm’s center, there were no reports of significant injuries attributed to Omar.

The hurricane later passed over open water midday between the British Virgin Islands and St. Martin, then dissipated over the central Atlantic without directly striking any more land areas.
