Typhoon Hagupit Lashes China and Northern Philippines September 26, 2008

China’s Guangdong province and nearby territories were lashed by high winds and storm-surge tides as Typhoon Hagupit made landfall near the city of Maoming.

Winds in excess of 125 mph (200 km/h) were recorded near the storm’s center, and wind damage was reported in Macao and Hong Kong as Hagupit passed nearby.

At least one person was killed in China and another six died in the northern Philippines from flooding associated with the typhoon.

Hagupit means "lashing" in the Filipino language of Tagalog.
