Typhoon Sinlaku Leaves 11 Dead In Taiwan September 19, 2008
Typhoon Sinlaku can be seen lashing the entire island of Taiwan over the weekend of Sept. 13-14.
Rescue officials in Taiwan said that at least 11 people were killed when Typhoon Sinlaku suddenly veered west, striking the island instead of maintaining a predicted northerly course.

The National Fire Agency said that more than 6 inches of rainfall (160 mm) triggered mudslides across the island and caused bridges, hotels and houses to collapse.

High winds from the powerful storm also knocked out power, injured 20 other people and disrupted land and air traffic.

China evacuated nearly half a million people from coastal areas of Fujian province and ordered fishing boats to return to port as a precaution should the storm move westward to the mainland.

But Sinlaku eventually left Taiwan and moved over southern Japan as a tropical storm during the latter half of the week.
