Quake Map of Indonesia
A shallow earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 struck southern Sumatra Island on Tuesday, leaving one woman dead and at least 20 people injured.

Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency said the quake occurred at 10:07 a.m. local time in Bengkulu province at a depth of 6 miles (10 km).

A report by the online news site Kompas said an elderly victim died after being hit by debris from a falling house in Lahat.

The quake also heavily damaged more than 50 homes in several villages of the Lahat district, the report said.

The Indonesian archipelago is situated on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

At least 23 people died and thousands of homes were wrecked last September when an 8.4 magnitude quake rocked West Sumatra and other areas.
