Hurricane Hanna Threatens North Carolina Coast September 5, 2008
Tropical Storm Hanna skirted the Bahamas as it gained strength on Thursday.
An area of disturbed weather in the Atlantic slowly strengthened into Tropical Storm Hanna in late August, before briefly reaching hurricane strength just north of Haiti.

Hanna was weakened back to tropical storm force as it swirled over Haiti for nearly four days.

Resulting flash flooding killed at least 61 people and forced thousands of residents in the country’s fourth-largest city to take refuge on rooftops.

U.N. peacekeepers plucked hundreds of stranded people in Gonaives to safety during a series of helicopter rescues.

Hanna slowly began to creep northward and become more organized late in the week as it appeared to take aim on the coast of North Carolina.

It was expected to strike the area as a Category 1 hurricane over the weekend.
