Hurricane Gustav Making Landfall in Louisiana.
Hurricane Gustav’s rampage across Louisiana left at least 10 people dead and an estimated $10 billion in damage.
That is in addition to the 77 fatalities the storm caused in Haiti and 10 other deaths in Jamaica.
Former President Fidel Castro described Gustav’s damage to eastern Cuba as being like “an atomic blast.”
The weather station in the town of Paso Real de San Diego recorded some of Cuba's most powerful winds in half a century, comparable only to an unnamed hurricane that battered eastern parts of the island in 1944.
Gustav’s impact on the U.S. Gulf Coast would have been much worse if the storm had not been weakened by its passage over Cuba.
Accompanying wind sheer and a patch of cooler Gulf waters helped to prevent the storm from regaining strength before reaching Louisiana.
