A sharp quake on Indonesia’s remote Sumbawa Island destroyed more than 500 homes and damaged at least 825 others on Thursday morning.

Officials said that five people were injured during the shaking, which was centered 165 miles (265 km) east-northeast of the popular Bali resort area.

Indonesian geologists determined that the quake was relatively shallow when it struck at 6:41 a.m. local time just off the coast of Sumbawa.

Local officials said many residents had already gone to work when the quake struck, and those who were still at home quickly fled outside when the shaking began.

Damage from the quake included cracked or toppled walls, collapsed rooftops and cracks, according to Maman Susanto, an official at the Disaster Management Agency
