The same region was devastated by an 8.0 magnitude temblor that left nearly 90,000 people dead or missing on May 12.
Tuesday’s quake struck shortly after the three-day Olympic torch relay passed through Sichuan before moving on to Beijing.
The official Xinhua news agency reports that most of the houses collapsed in the village of Wangjia, nearest the epicenter, while buildings in surrounding villages also sustained significant damage.
Local officials said 22 people were injured by the quake.
The U.S. Geological Survey determined the epicenter was about 30 miles (50 km) north-northwest of Guangyuan, near Sichuan's border with neighboring Gansu province.
