The trio of tremors were some of the strongest to strike the region since an 8.0 magnitude "great earthquake" killed nearly 70,000 people and left more than 18,000 others missing on May 12.
The Xinhua news agency reports that the latest quakes were felt strongly and lasted for a long period of time. “Mountains and houses shook vehemently,” said Xinhua.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the three tremors measured 5.6, 4.9 and 6.0 respectively. The agency determined that the epicenters were at the juncture of Ningqiang County in Shaanxi Province and Qingchuan County in Sichuan.
Xinhua said that a 60-year-old woman died of a cerebral hemorrhage after she panicked during the strong tremors. A 24-year-old man was seriously injured after jumping from a two-story building in a panic.
The region is in the midst of a massive reconstruction and recovery effort in the wake of May’s great earthquake. Millions of displaced residents are being relocated and employed to rebuild the local economy.
