A 5.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the central Peruvian province of Oxapampa on Monday evening left 39 people injured and more than 100 homes destroyed.

The quake, which struck at 7:17 p.m. local time, hit the Huancabamba district and was felt in the towns of Jatun Pata, Monopata, San Pedro de Herrera, Laturachi and Tingo-Pozuzo, according to Radioprogramas del Peru.

Shaking from the initial quake and a subsequent strong aftershock triggered landslides that blocked roads in parts of the Andes.

The U.S. Geological Survey determined that the epicenter was 160 miles (255 km) northeast of Lima at a depth of about 6 miles (10 km).
