Indonesian Volcano Spews Ash June 13, 2008
Mount Soputan Volcano
Ash clouds spewed by Indonesia's Mount Soputan don't appear to threaten nearby communities.
Indonesia’s Mount Soputan erupted with clouds of hot ash that soared high above Sulawesi Island.

Some of the ash fell on nearby villages, but officials said the mountain’s rumblings did not warrant evacuations.

Rumblings inside Soputan in December 2006 prompted officials to warn nearby residents to be prepared for possible evacuation.

The swarm of seismic movements that prompted the alert later subsided, and the mountain has remained relatively quiet in recent months.

The 5,849-foot (1,783-metre) mountain previously erupted in December 2004 and twice during 2003, spewing lava and volcanic ash up to 25 miles (40 km) to the north.

The nearest village is 5 miles (8 km) from Soputan's crater.
