Java Volcano Spews Scorching Hot Clouds May 30, 2008
Mount Semeru and Mount Bromo on Java
Mount Semeru puffs steam behind a cloud of sulphur gas from Mount Bromo in the Tengger caldera on Java.
Clouds of searing heat cascaded down the slopes of Indonesia’s Mount Semeru, on the island of Java, prompting officials to warn nearby residents to stay clear of the volcano.

Geologists later upgraded the alert status of the volcano to level three, one level below a full state of alert, after Semeru sent pyroclastic flows cascading as far as 10,000 feet (3,000 metres) down its slopes on Wednesday.

Villagers and farmers were urged to remain at least 2.5 miles (4 kilometres) from the crater, especially around the southeast of the volcano's slopes.

In February 2007, an explosion of Semeru blanketed a nearby town with volcanic debris, but no injuries were reported.
