The storm was predicted to move steadily northward over the next several days, remaining far from any significant land areas.
Forecasters predicted that Rammasun would rapidly attain typhoon force by the weekend as it drifted slowly north-northeastward over the Pacific Ocean.
It was expected to attain Category 3 strength to the southeast of Okinawa with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185 km/h).
Long-range computer guidance projected that Rammasun would then make a turn to the northeast, away from Japan’s southernmost islands, early next week.
Rammasun means "god of thunder" in the Thai language and is one of several names submitted by nations of the western Pacific basin to be used during typhoon season.
