Indonesia raised the alert level for two of its volcanoes after both showed signs of increased activity.
Fishermen and tourist boats have been advised to remain more than a mile off the island created by Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatoa) in the Sunda Strait.
“Anak Krakatau’s explosions are strong, so we urge people not to get close to it as it is throwing out flaming rocks,” Surono, head of the volcanology center in Bandung city, told Reuters.
Anak Krakatau's last significant eruption was in June 1994, when it killed one U.S. tourist and injured three Britons and two Indonesians.
Mount Ibu, in North Maluku province, began spewing ash and rattling the region with volcanic tremors.
Villagers living near Ibu were advised to wear face masks to protect against falling ash.
