The eye of Cyclone Ivan can be seen striking the eastern coast of Madagascar near the resort island of Sainte Marie.
HIgh winds and flash flooding from Cyclone Ivan pummeled the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar on Sunday, killing at least 11 people and leaving hundreds of others homeless.
The small tourist island of Sainte Marie, just off Madagascar’s east coast, sustained catastrophic damage from the former Category-4 storm, which flattened a hotel and most of the island’s infrastructure.
Winds of 143 mph (230 km/h) were clocked on Sainte Marie as the eye of the storm roared ashore, the Tribune de Madagascar reported.
Remnants of Ivan were expected to hit central Mozambique on the African mainland, where accompanying rains could exacerbate the heaviest flooding there in many years.
