A 2003 eruption of Kanlaon sent a column of ash soaring high above Negros Island.
Increased activity within the central Philippines’ Kanlaon volcano prompted officials to put nearby areas under alert, meaning that the mountain could expel blasts of steam and ash at any time.
Located on Negros Island, Kanlaon produced a series of minor ash explosions during June and July of 2006, but activity dwindled by late in the year.
On Aug. 10, 1996, Kanlaon erupted without warning, killing two students who were among 24 mountain climbers that became trapped near the summit.
