A slowly moving flow of lava from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano threatened the few remaining residents of the Royal Gardens subdivision before coming to a halt a half-mile away.

Since 1983, lava has overrun the Big Island subdivision, destroying more than 60 homes.

Most of the upper portion of Royal Gardens was abandoned after lava repeatedly flowed into the area during Kilauea's ongoing 25-year eruption.

The highway that provided access to the subdivision became blocked by the flows, but county officials later bulldozed a path through the cooled lava for the handful of remaining residents. Most of those residents have lived in the subdivision only for brief periods of time.

Civil Defense officials warned any remaining residents to be aware of fire and smoke hazards as the fresh flow neared.
