
A lingering plume can be seen after an explosive eruption that sent ash soaring high into the sky southeast of Mexico City on January 5.
Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano produced a spectacular eruption that showered nearby communities with ash.
Emergency officials said that the ash plume was the largest expelled by the mountain in the last seven years.
Popocatepetl awakened from a dormant state in 1994, and has since produced numerous explosive eruptions.
None of the blasts has directly threatened residents in the surrounding state of Puebla.
